If you really want to make a difference in the world, step outside your comfortable niche and move to someplace like Dallas or Birmingham or Atlanta were we're still fighting for our basic rights. (I mean, please, the Texas Sodomy law was just overturned in 2003) You're like a rich kid whining to a poor one that you got the wrong color pony for your birthday. posted by: zekeblog (reply) post date: 08.04.05 (11:28 am) Boy, are you off the mark in every which-way! I've been living on a very low income for over 30 years (disability stipend), in a city that has become extremely crude, self-centered, hateful, and full of garbage and homophobic bums. I am daily attacked, threatened, and intimidated because I refuse to give up my left-wing ideals, and go back in the closet on many levels (not just gay). This "Gay Mecca" is hellhole enough, that I dread the very thought of living elsewhere in the US. You have a stereotype notion of San Francisco. We are barely better off than any other US city, when it comes to a corrupt society and politics. I don't need to move elsewhere, or travel (neither of which I can afford), in order to "make a difference". And that is a universal truth. I just need to contribute my ideas via a public venue (such as the Internet), and trust they'll catch on. What we really need here in SF, is to stop these Xian yahoos from flooding our town (and greedy capitalsts, too). We need a fresh influx of progressive and radical activists, artists, and philosophers. But maybe you guys in "other" places need to have some GUTS to band together and fight back, right where you live, instead of demanding that only us Gay Meccans do all the dirty work. |
